2010 NBLU Summer Reading Program


The Importance of Summer Reading

Research has consistently documented the importance of summer reading. Students who read recreationally during the summer do better when the new school year begins. Studies show that students who do not read during the summer show a significant loss over the summer break. Research has shown that reading just four or five books during the summer can prevent this achievement and learning loss. The purpose of No Book Left Unread is to encourage K-12 students to engage in self-selected recreational summer reading to prevent learning loss and to foster improved student achievement.

NOTE: This year we are coordinating with the State Library and the public library reading programs to encourage students to participate in both summer reading programs. Since we are coordinating with the public libraries, NBLU participants will count minutes read and not pages read. Participants may read magazines (the pages should contain at least 50% text), newspapers, as well as online reading (books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, wikis, etc.). We still have only one reading log for students; just remind your high school students that they do not have to get a parent signature.


2010 NBLU Reader Leader Schools and Individuals will be announced by October 1, 2010 and will be recognized and receive their awards at the Awards Luncheon during the annual conference of the South Carolina Association of School Librarians, March 10, 2011, Columbia, South Carolina.
